Asian Boyz
Present Era
The Asian Boyz, also known in the streets and by the police as ABZ, is a predominately Southeast Asian street gang that originated in Los Angeles, California during the early 1990s.
The criminal gang was started in Los Angeles in the early 1990s by a group of schoolmates from a high school in the Westside district. The criminal ringleaders of this group were two Filipino brothers named Thomas and Pierre Mercado. The brothers attended high schools together in the suburban neighborhoods of Temple and East Los Angeles. The brothers formed the gang in order to defend themselves and combat already existing American gangs in the suburbs. Technically, the criminal gang was not formed as a sole entity, but was rather formed as a unification between other young Southeast Asian gangbangers across the Westside suburbs.
During the criminal gang's foundation, it was primarily comprised of young Khmer refugee men who had fled the 10 year long Cambodia-Vietnam War of the 1980s. A minority of members were economic immigrants from the Philippines.
The gang grew itself out in the Westside suburbs during the 1990s through drug distribution, gun running, neighborhood business extortion and prostitution. It had an additional focus on involvement with operating car theft rings. During this period of time, the Asian Boyz became partially factionalized. Numerous Asian Boyz sets that had expanded into the slums of the Eastside and South Central formed alliances with the Crips, with some directly falling under the Crip banner.
By the early 2000s, the Asian Boyz had spread across Los Angeles and New York. They were helped along the way by African American Crip gangs in Los Angeles/New York slums. As the gang grew in the streets, it also grew in Los Angeles and The Bronx prison system. As early as 2001, the gang had established distinct sets, formally known as cars, in 5 different Los Angeles and The Bronx state prisons. With the September 11 attacks happening late in the year, the gang started ordering its members with clean criminal records to enlist in the US Army and the US Marines. Simultaneously, certain factions of the gang left Los Angeles as a whole and migrated across the Pacific coast and the Western United States in order to avoid harsh legal penalties in Los Angeles.

Present Era
The Asian Boyz are presently active throughout New York and Los Angeles. Their most active cities are The Bronx (HS) and the East side of LA. They have a minor presence in Brooklyn (HS). In the largely rural counties and small farming towns, they are virtually non-existent.
Across the United States, the Asian Boyz are estimated by the police and federal authorities to have as many as 2,000 members spread across 14 U.S. States, with the gang being concentrated in major cities. The gang is mostly found in urban centers, but also operates in suburban and rural areas. The gang is known to have hundreds of members in state and federal prisons, and additionally has a minor presence in the United States military. Gangbangers usually prefer to enlist in the US Army or the US Marines, with the hopes that they will be placed into Combat Arms units in order to obtain advanced tactical and strategic training.
The criminal gang is culturally distinct from the criminal gang on the east coast. The gang on opposite coasts uses different colors, incorporates different slang vocabulary and falls under separate central leadership.
The Asian Boyz across the country are predominately made up of Southeast Asian immigrants and their descendants. Lao, Khmer, Hmong and Vietnamese young people make up most of the ethnic demographic. Other ethnicities such as Filipinos, Koreans, Japanese, Chinese and a low percent of African-Americans are also represented, but are not nearly as numerous.

1 LIFE 2 LIVE, 2 6ICC TO DIE // ABZ 1226
1 life 2 live, 2 6icc to die or Asian Boyz 1226 is the second oldest Asian Boyz set in The Bronx, New York (HS) with a 26 year long history that dates back to 1993. The set was formed by Khmer war refugees who arrived in The Bronx, New York (HS) during the late 1980s, when the Cambodia-Vietnam War was still on going. Some of the set's oldest founders were former Khmer nationalist guerrillas who fought against the communist Vietnamese occupation.
During the 1990s, the set built itself a reputation as being one of the most brutally violent sets of the Asian Boyz. The extreme violence was typically ordered and directed by the gang's shotcallers, and in particular, the ones that saw combat as guerrillas in Cambodia. By the late 1990s, the set's level of violence was rivaled only by the Mara Salvatrucha. In the same time period, the set shifted its focus away from terrorizing innocent people in the suburbs. It instead mostly focused on illegally earning money through drug distribution and gun running. The gang also had several pimps rise to the occasion during this period of time.
Throughout the 2000s, the Asian Boyz 1226 drew a tremendous amount of New York police scrutiny through their unusually violent acts towards their rivals and innocent people, along with their heavy involvement with 's drug underworld.
This police scrutiny culminated in 2008, when a white gangbanger and a New York police investigator were both gunned down inside of a Vietnamese restaurant located in 53rd street. The shooting, which occurred in the early evening of August 7th, was carried out by an illegal Cambodian immigrant and veteran member of the Asian Boyz 1226. The target of the shooting was a middle echelon member of the Santa Maria Skinheads. The New York police investigator who died wasn't meant to be shot. In the weeks following, several arrests were made in connection with the two public homicides, including that of the gang shooter. He was later sentenced to life in prison without parole for 25 years in 2010. His deportation order to Cambodia will be served once he hits parole in 2035.
The gang suffered two injunctions in the several years following the shooting; one in 2009 and the other in 2015. During these injunctions, dismantling drug sales and prostitution rings were the main focus of the police. As a direct result of these injunctions, 32 members of the set were sent to state prisons. The lightest sentence was for 15 years.
The Asian Boyz 1226 are still active in the Greys suburbs that are located in 53rd street. Due to infighting, gang wars and police action, the set has been drastically reduced in size over the past decade. The set has roughly 35 members in the streets on average, coupled with around 70 who are currently locked up in state and federal prisons. The gang is the second largest Asian Boyz set in all of The Bronx, but most of the members are currently serving long sentences in prisons.
The Asian Boyz 1226 is notable for being one of the most ethnically exclusive sets in all of The Bronx, New York. The majority of the set's members are nowadays comprised of 1st generation Khmer Americans from the city. A small number of the set's members are of Lao, Vietnamese descent and Africans-Americans but they are considerably small in number. In the past, the set has jumped-out or outright killed its non-Khmer members over internal ethnic disputes, forcing the surviving members into other more ethnically inclusive sets.
